This is what happens when you get other people to take
pictures of yourself. These two girls had so much trouble
trying to take this picture, and I tried to explain to
them what I wanted, which was not much, but they spoke
no English and we were not communicating. But we were laughing.
I was trying to get them to not cut of the top of the
Lublin castle.
When this fiasco was done and they turned to leave I
yelled back "Thank you!" in Polish.
They both turned
and looked at me like, "What?! You speak Polish after
all that!?" I
guess at least my Polish "thank you"s were getting
convincing by now.
The few words I set myself to learn in each country
was "excuse me", "thank you", "yes", "no",
"please", "hello" and how to count to three. Using
my word list and then pointing or saying a proper name
gets me pretty far, and I never needed anything more
than 3. Table for 1, 1 ticket,
1 room, 2 or 3 nights, rarely more. These are
the words that got jotted down in my pocket notebook
I carried everywhere. But I still had great trouble remembering
them. Such is me and languages!
