Adjacent to my hotel was a large shopping area that stretched for blocks. The nice thing about it was that the streets were covered over with a glass roof. Closer to the river I stumbled onto a great street for restaurants. It's more of a narrow alley (named Pontocho?) that stretches for blocks chock full of eateries.
The hotel I stayed in was the Kyoto Central-Inn in this area. It was very convenient to the sights, nightlife, and an international ATM at a place called All Card Plaza. Next to the ATM is a great internet cafe called Aspirin. It's a compfy place to hang, but very expensive internet.
One thing I was surprised about in Japan was how it was difficult to find cash machines that worked with foreign ATM cards. I had to make sure I stocked up on cash each day (and you need LOTS of cash in Japan!) as smaller restaurants and shops don't take credit cards either.
